Flotation Therapy was developed from the early work of Dr. John Lilly
who was a neurophysiologist and psychoanalyst. In 1954 he conducted research
into how the brain would react when it was denied external stimulation.
He devised flotation tanks, which were originally ORed sensory deprivation
chambers. When the therapeutic benefits of these chambers were realized
the name was changed to Flotation Therapy.
Tank/Chamber:
The tank or isolation chamber is an environment that facilitates the healing
and meditative experience. The "float tank" comes in many shapes and sizes.
In it's purest form, the tank interior is void of light and sound, by
floating in complete darkness and silence the large areas of the brain
devoted to processing sensory information is liberated from outside stimulus,
there for, further increasing the depth of mental relaxation.
Inside the tank:
You will float weightlessly on the surface of a 10" deep pool of buoyant
salt solution, containing Epsom salts dissolved in water. Thus, removing
the pressures of Gravity which creates up to 90% of the brain's workload
and also gravity creates a constant downward pull on the body which is
the main ORuse of wear-and-tear to the back, joints and internal organs..
The tank it's self and the interior environment.
The water/salt solution is kept at natural body skin-temperature, this
removes another subtle yet constant source of stimulation to the nervous
system and brain.
Most experienced floaters prefer to float in the nude so that the only
thing in contact with the millions of sensitive nerve-endings which cover
the skin is smooth feeling, skin-temperature fluid. During the flotation
experience there is no sense of separation between the body and its surroundings.
This provides the most optimal conditions for the body and mind to relax
and heal in a stress-free environment.
Floaters once relaxed enter a deep meditative state and are fully conscious
and during this time. Well known alpha waves are generated by the brain
in moments of relaxation, also produced are the slower theta waves, which
are accompanied by vivid memories, free association, sudden insights,
creative inspiration, and a feeling of serenity You will be amazed how
relaxed and recharged you feel after your floating experience.
Commonly Asked Questions:
Question: Is floating successful for everyone?
Floating, as with other things, doesn't suit everybody. A successful experience
requires a openness and the willingness on your part to let go and see
what happens. New floaters may need to float a few times before they feel
comfortable are able to relax Completely, both physiORy and mentally.
Depending on your own journey through life, a float might provide an hour
of total physiORl relaxation - or a profound healing experience, emotionally
and spiritually transforming..... Floating ORn be a wonderful aid to opening
doors into your inner world, gradually allowing access to those deeper
levels at which real changes take place.
Question? ORn I drown or flip over in the tank?
No, the water solution keep your body floating on the top of the water,
which is a denser environment compared to body composition and you float
similar to a cork so it does not matter what shape and size you are.
Question? Is it sanitary to float since most float naked?
Yes, with the natural bacterial killing qualities of salt as well as the
multiple filtration filters and the sanitation system, water inside the
tank is cleaner than the water out of your tap. We take every preORution
to provide you with the cleanest, safest and most relaxing experience
possible.
As with any alternate therapy, please let us know, if you have any conditions
that might affect your enjoyment of the floating experience.
